News 2013-2016

May 12, 2016 – Hugh will be speaking at the Alberta Real Estate Association conference in Jasper, Alberta.  Hugh’s topic will be Hot Topics for Realtors in Condominium Transactions.

April 30, 2016 – At the annual Canadian Condominium Institute Conference and Trade Show, Hugh presented on two panels.  The first panel was on the Insurance Battle Royale, where two sides debated the implementation and recommended legislation on insurance law in condominiums.  The second was part of the Legal Expert panel held as the concluding event of the conference.  The Conference sold out and was a tremendous success.  All credit to the organizers on a job well done.

April 24-26, 2016 – Hugh was part of the Condominium Law panel at the Legal Education Society of Alberta conference held in Lake Louise, Alberta.  Hugh’s topic was on New Home Buyer Legislation and implementation of the new home warranty regime in Alberta, as well as a brief update on the state of amendments to the Condominium Property Act.  The annual spring LESA refresher is one of the premier legal education events for lawyers in Alberta.  This year’s conference was on Real Estate Issues and included the condominium panel Hugh spoke on.

April 7 and 14, 2016 – Hugh continues his public education efforts with a spring session for Wise Buyers in Condominiums for Next Step continuing education.  The session was held in Sherwood Park, Alberta.

February 1, 2016 – Willis Law is thrilled to announce the addition of Ms. Natasha Sutherland to our office.  Natasha joins our firm after several years practicing at a large down town law firm.  Natasha’s practice includes condominium law, bankruptcy, insolvency, collections and commercial litigation.  We are looking forward to Natasha’s contributions.

December 16, 2015 – Hugh participated as a representative of the Canadian Condominium Institute (North Alberta) when meeting with representatives of Service Alberta and in a separate meeting with representatives of the Minister of Service Alberta.  Both meetings were in relation to amendments to the Condominium Property Act and associated regulations.

November 29, 2015 – Hugh was quoted in an Edmonton Journal article related to misrepresentations on real estate listings for condominiums in the Edmonton region.  Hugh continues to raise the issue with stakeholders to attempt to provide better consumer protection for consumers in the condominium marketplace.  http://edmontonjournal.com/news/local-news/alberta-real-estate-council-fines-dozens-of-sellers-for-improper-condo-measurements

October 29 and November 5, 2015 – Hugh taught the Wise Buyer Condominium session for Next Step Continuing Education through the Elk Island Public School program. Hugh’s efforts are pro bono to help provide education opportunities for condominium owners.

October 19 and 26, 2015 – Hugh taught the Condominium Lifestyle presentation for Edmonton Public Schools Continuing Education program.  This session focused on issues for prospective condominium purchasers.

October 5, 2015 – Hugh was awarded a Volunteer Service Award by the Canadian Condominium Institute (North Alberta Chapter).  The award recognized Hugh’s pro bono contributions for the CCI government liasion committee in respect of amendments to the Condominium Property Act.  In 2015 Hugh participated in sessions in Edmonton, Sherwood Park, Red Deer, Grande Prairie, and Fort McMurray.  In total, well over  1,200 people attended pro bono educational events at which Hugh presented condominium law issues in 2015.

September 18, 2015 – Hugh was Chair for the Legal Education Society of Alberta continuing education session held in Red Deer, Alberta.  This LESA session saw panels on bankruptcy, corporate commercial, immigration, pensions and agriculture for central Alberta practitioners.  Hugh is thankful for the dedication and efforts of all the panellists who presented at the seminar.

June 20, 2015 – Hugh presented at the second of the Edmonton based Changes to the Condominium Property Act events for the Canadian Condominium Institute – North Alberta Chapter.

June 13, 2015 – Hugh Willis will be in Grande Prairie as part of the Canadian Condominium Institute – North Alberta Chapter on Changes to the Condominium Property Act.

May 29 and 30, 2015 – Hugh will again be a speaker at two sessions for the Canadian Condominium Institute – North Alberta Chapter trade show.  Hugh will be co-presenting with Ms. Helena Smith on Bylaw preparation and enforcement.  Hugh will continue his participation on the Legal Experts panel as well.  This will mark the 10th consecutive year that Hugh has spoken as part of the Legal Expert panel at the CCI annual legal panel event.

May 23, 2015 – will see Hugh present at the first of the Edmonton sessions for the Canadian Condominium Institute – North Alberta Chapter on Changes to the Condominium Property Act.  The presentation will be at the Northgate Lions Centre.

May 8 and 9, 2015 – Hugh Willis was in Fort McMurray as part of the Canadian Condominium Institute – North Alberta Chapter’s presentation series on Changes to the Condominium Property Act.  Hugh will speak as part of a panel to condominium owners and interested parties in the Fort McMurray region.

May 7, 2015 – Hugh Willis will be speaking at an in house event for boards on insurance issues in condominiums.  The event is presented by a management company for their boards of directors and will focus on the common issues boards face when encountering an insurance claim.

March 31, 2015 Rebecca married her best friend, Derek Lorenz.  The union of their blended family took place on a beautiful sunny day on a beach in Varadero, Cuba.  They were delighted to have such a wonderful turnout of family and close friends. Congratulations Rebecca Lorenz!  Please note her new e-mail address is rlorenz@willislaw.ca.

March 4 and 11, 2015 – Hugh Willis instructed the condominium law session for the Elk Island Public Schools continuing education courses.  The course features condominium basics, discussion on how changes in the legislation will affect owners, as well as a robust discussion on becoming a wise buyer for future condominium purchases.

February 18, 2015 – Hugh Willis co-presented with Helena Smith the CCI North evening seminar on Bylaw Drafting and Bylaw Enforcement.  This marks the 8th time that Hugh has presented this annual session, the last several of which have been co-presented with Ms. Smith.  The event was sold out and fantastic group participation. It was a very enjoyable teaching experience.

January 25, 2014 – Catharine Baier and Rebecca Bradbury attended the Canadian Condominium Institute weekend course CM-100.  The goal in attending this session was to obtain a better understanding of the client perspective when approaching legal issues in condominium.  This goal was achieved and we look forward to continuing to serve our clients.

December 9, 2014 – Hugh Willis, along with Anand Sharma (President of CCI – North), Victoria Archer, The Honorable Bruce Rowe, MLA for Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills, and The Honorable Deron Bilous, MLA for Edmonton (Beverly-Clareview) held a press conference at the Alberta Legislature over concerns with Bill 9, an Amendment to the Condominium Property Act.

December 7, 2014 – Hugh Willis and Victoria Archer led over 300 condominium owners, board members, managers and industry professionals through the proposed changes for Bill 9, an Amendment to the Condominium Property Act. Local media were in attendance. The session was past seated capacity in the conference room, notwithstanding the short notice that the Canadian Condominium Institute had in organizing the event.

October 15 (Edmonton) and October 22, 2014 (Calgary) – Hugh Willis was a panelist for the Legal Education Society of Alberta seminars on Bare Land Condominiums. The audience for LESA events is primarily other lawyers in the province. Hugh’s session featured discussion on condominium issues within the New Home Buyer Protection Act and associated Regulations. It also included an update on case law and a discussion on amendments to the Condominium Property Act.

October 6, 2014 – Hugh Willis participated at the Edmonton Central Lions Seniors Association and provided a seminar on the Pros and Cons of Condominium Living.

June 18, 2014 – Hugh Willis participated in a session with representatives of Service Alberta respecting proposed changes to the Condominium Property Act, in Red Deer, Alberta.

May 10, 2014 – Hugh Willis participated in two sessions at the annual Canadian Condominium Institute – North Alberta Chapter Trade Show. He co-presented The Good, the Bad, and the Bylaws with Ms. Helena Smith of Mayfield Management. This session concerned the drafting and enforcement of condominium bylaws. Hugh was also part of the Legal Experts panel which saw the panel answer questions from the audience on legal issues facing the condominium industry in Alberta. This marks the 9th consecutive annual session that Hugh has been part of the Canadian Condominium Institute’s Legal Expert panel, as well as the 7th year Hugh has taught or co-presented seminars on Bylaws for the Canadian Condominium Institute.

May 9, 2014 – Hugh Willis presented an evening seminar on Changes to the Condominium Property Act for the Canadian Condominium Institute – North Alberta Chapter. The session discussed an initial review of the proposed changes to condominium legislation in Alberta.

April 24, 2014 – Hugh Willis presented condominium issues affecting the banking industry to at an in-house session organized by a banking institution. In attendance were banking employees from across Alberta.

April 23, 2014 – Jordan Reiniger and Hugh Willis co-presented to the Canadian Bar Association, South Alberta Chapter, Immigration Law Section on recruitment options for Labour Market Opinions. The session also introduced yesjobs.ca to the Calgary immigration law marketplace.

April 16, 2014 – Willis Law is proud to be a founding sponsor of Yesjobs.ca, a social enterprise established to help put Canadians in touch with Canadian employers looking for workers. February 19, 2014 – Bylaw Drafting, Revision and Enforcement – Canadian Condominium Institute – Northern Alberta. Hugh, along with Ms. Helena Smith, presented the seminar on Bylaw Drafting, Revision and Enforcement. Hugh is a frequent instructor on bylaw related matters.

February 19, 2014 – CBC Radio Interview on Immigration Law: Hugh Willis was interviewed by CBC Radio to discuss the law applicable to fraud and misrepresentation in Marriages of Convenience, also known as Fraudulent Marriages.

February 6, 2014 – Willis Law held a reception for clients and colleagues at its new location.

October 15-16, 2013 – Hugh Willis was a panelist at the Legal Education Society of Alberta seminars on Immigration Law.  Hugh’s presentation was part of the Business Immigration panel.  The sessions occurred in Edmonton (October 15) and Calgary (October 16).
